My teaching approach for GCSE and A-Level History and Politics is rooted in evidence-based strategies that promote deep understanding, critical thinking, and exam success. I focus on retrieval practice and spaced repetition to strengthen students’ long-term memory of key facts, events, and concepts. I incorporate dual coding and mind mapping to help visualise complex ideas and relationships, especially in topics like ideologies, government systems, and historical causation.
Essay writing is at the core of my teaching. I model how to construct strong arguments, use PEEL paragraphs, and integrate historiography or political theory where appropriate. Students regularly practise timed responses using mark schemes and examiner feedback to develop exam technique and confidence.
For History, I emphasise chronology, causation, and interpretation skills. In Politics, I focus on evaluating contemporary examples and applying political thinkers’ ideas effectively. I use interleaving to connect topics and deepen understanding, especially in comparative or synoptic essays.
Above all, I believe in adaptive teaching—tailoring lessons to student needs using diagnostic assessment and targeted feedback. I aim to make History and Politics both rigorous and engaging, empowering students to become confident, independent thinkers ready for their exams and beyond.
