I teach mathematics and can support pupils who are working towards National 5 as well as GCSE/IGSCE (Foundation and Higher tiers).
I enjoy teaching maths, interacting and forming positive relationships with my pupils and help them achieve their best potential. After a few years of tutoring on one-to-one basis, I realised that I have maxed out on the number of pupils I can take, but the requests are still rolling in and every time I have to decline a pupil due to lack of availability my heart breaks a little bit as I am denying someone help that they so desperately need, especially near the exam period. Therefore, I have decided to create a second profile here on First Tutors, to gather pupils of the same maths level into groups of 5 or less and support them with maths, explain various topics and concepts and at the same time help them improve their grades.
As a former secondary school teacher I have developed an in depth knowledge of all the various levels of school mathematics, the requirements for each level and various exam boards. Over the years I have supported many pupils and helped them improve on their test/exam scores. When teaching, I utilise various teaching resources such as worksheets, past papers, textbooks and resources that I have developed myself over the years.
Before we start any lessons, I will send out to the pupil a short test to complete that will help me to assess their knowledge of maths and the level they are at. This will also allow me to understand what are their strengths, areas for development as well as the gaps they may have and what material needs revising/explaining to close those gaps. This test will also allow me understand in which group to place the pupil that will be of similar knowledge and abilities.
Once the test is complete and I had a chance to assess it we can begin our lessons. On the agreed day, just before the beginning of the lesson, I will send a zoom invitation to pupils to join the virtual classroom. During the lesson there will be 5 or less pupils present. Due to me assessing every pupil's test prior to the lesson I will already have determined what needs to be covered during our lessons and I will adjust my explanation and lesson pace according. I will always set out targets in small achievable goals and move on to more complicated material once everyone in the class has a good understanding of the fundamentals.
Group lessons are a great way to promote knowledge sharing and peer collaboration. Additionally, realising that there are other people in the same boat as you are in and that there is nothing shameful in struggling, making mistakes and requiring additional support can consequentially boost confidence and efforts when working on maths problems, whether you are working on them single-handedly or in the team. Working on problems together with friends can turn maths from a dreadful activity into something that you are looking forward to.
Disclaimer: please note, that if the classroom does not get filled and it will consist only of one pupil for some period of time, I will need to terminate our lessons or we can discuss switching to one-to-one tutoring basis. Therefore, if you/ your child has a friend or a classmate with whom you/they would like to work together that would be an ideal situation. The price is £20 per person for group lessons and £35 for a one-to one tuition.
