Maths Tutoring in Flint

My name is Lewis and I am a Lecturer in Actuarial Science/Mathematics at the University of York. My particular expertise are in probability theory, stochastic processes and statistics. I completed a PhD and Masters degree in Mathematics (First Class) at the University of Liverpool. Although my current position focuses on Financial and Actuarial Mathematics, my own education covered a broad range of mathematical topics including, pure, applied, proability and statistics.

Tutoring Experience

I am currently the module leader for a degree level actuarial mathematics course entitled: ‘Actuarial Modelling’ at the University of York. Prior to this position I have held two lecturing roles at the University of Hertfordshire and the University of Liverpool where I have taught a number of courses, including: ‘Linear Statistical Modelling’, ‘Multivariate Statistics’, ‘Risk Theory’ and ‘Life Contingencies (Insurance)’. During my PhD studies I was employed as a general teaching assistant providing tuition for a broad range of mathematics modules, including pure mathematics, applied probability and financial/actuarial mathematics.

Tutoring Approach

The algorithmic nature of mathematics results in many trying adopting a memorise and regurgitate approach to learning and revising. However, this can only take you so far and makes it extremely difficult to handle and solve problems that have been provided in different contexts. On the other hand, truly understanding the theory and methods not only allows you to solve different versions of the same problem, it allows you to really explore, criticise and question the approaches. Once you can do this, you begin to understand that mathematics is not a simple set of rules you MUST follow but a set of axioms working harmoniously together to create a toolkit for understanding our world.
