I am Karen and I specialise in teaching English GCSEs to young people and adults; I have tutored 11+ and 13+ pupils through their preparation for public and private school entrance exams. I have also provided guidance to under-graduates and post-graduates for coursework essays and dissertations in English and with the structure and style of essays outside my own subject area. I am a graduate of the University of Aberdeen and post-graduate of the University of Surrey and the University of Hertfordshire
I hold three Masters Degrees: two in English and one in Education.
I enjoy reading, cycle and swim daily and enjoy playing my tenor horn in a brass band.
I am DBS checked.

Tutoring Experience

I have taught English Language and Literature in technical (FE) colleges and 6th form colleges. I was Head of English for 13 years and have taught students aged 10 - 80.
I have been providing one-to-one, personal tuition for twelve years and in that time I have taught: English Language and English Literature at all levels; ESOL English at PET and FSE levels; Pre-GCSE Maths; Study Skills; prep for Entrance Exams including CEE in Maths and English; Verbal and Non-verbal Reasoning. I have guided undergraduates and postgraduates through dissertations in a variety of subjects including: Nursing, Speech Therapy, Education and English Literature and a post-graduate MA in Politics.

Tutoring Approach

I believe that increasing a student’s confidence in the use of English is the key to their success. I am equally enthusiastic about teaching English Language and English Literature. Both subjects are fascinating and I love to pass on my passion for the subjects to my students. I have a wealth of materials and techniques to choose from to interest the most discerning student. I also develop materials to suit the individual student’s learning style and interests.
I help university students to improve the English of their academic essays. Essays and dissertations written in precise English impress the marker and result in a higher grade.
