Dave provides maths tuition for our daughter twice a week. We have found Dave to be an excellent tutor. He is very knowledgeable, polite and always works very closely with us to ensure the best for our daughter. We would happily recommend Dave to other students. Thank you Dave and keep up the brilliant work!
Thank you for your kind words, it's been an absolute pleasure working closely with you to ensure the best outcomes possible. Your daughter seems to really enjoy my lessons, my teaching style, and doesn't mind being corrected when things are difficult. Your daughter is a pleasure to teach and I wish her all the very best in the coming SATs.
From Deb
We have been using tutoring services for over 12 months for our 12-year-old daughter, initially with a fantastic primary school tutor. She built an amazing rapport, excelled significantly, and achieved great results. Our daughter genuinely looked forward to her sessions, and the communication was always supportive, informative, and encouraging. Unfortunately, we had to stop with this tutor when our daughter moved to high school.
Wanting to continue with tutoring, we found David through this site, as he seemed to meet our criteria. However, after just two sessions, it became clear that this arrangement would not work. While David was well-organized, his approach was overly harsh, rigid, and not age-appropriate. He was unwilling to adapt to the teaching methods our daughter was familiar with and expected her to grasp concepts she had not yet covered in school. Instead of providing encouragement, his approach left our daughter feeling discouraged and inadequate.
David’s tutoring style was intense and repetitive, but not in a supportive way—he expected her to pick things up immediately without proper guidance. As a result, both sessions ended with our daughter in tears, which is unacceptable. When we addressed our concerns with David, his response was simply that "Tutoring can be intensive and a little overwhelming for a new young student. Let's try again next week." This completely disregarded the distress our daughter experienced. A tutor should demonstrate greater empathy, adaptability, and listening skills when working with new students, particularly younger ones.
We have used tutoring services for over 10 years with multiple tutors from this site, and our experience has always been positive. Our eldest daughter, who graduated with a first-class degree last year, greatly benefited from these services, but never once was she left feeling defeated or unsupported.
Both of our daughters are hardworking and generally get along well with others, but we cannot allow this negative experience to continue affecting our youngest. Therefore, we have decided to discontinue tutoring with David. Unfortunately, we also found him to be quite dismissive and unwilling to adjust his approach, which only reinforced our decision.
Hi Deborah,
Thank you for your feedback after only two lessons, however I find this very disappointing, inaccurate and disrespectful.
For the record, I will quote your message, then the message I sent to you in full:
"From Deborah:
Hi David. I have Liv in floods of tears after today’s session. She really did not fully understand the subject area and she genuinely felt that you were very critical of her for not understanding the terminology. Debbie
From Dave:
Hi,
I'm very sorry to hear that. It will come in time.
Tutoring can be intensive and a little over whelming for a new young student.
Let's try again next week.
Regards Dave"
As far as I'm concerned and as you can plainly see - I didn't disregard anything. If you wanted to know exactly what I was going to change, then you should have specifically asked! So why quote half a message? - because it suits your narrative.
Thank you for recognising my organisational skills. Whilst I'm always very well organised, rushing into an arranged lesson by yourself last minute does not set up a young student well for learning. Unfortunately I can't return the compliment.
It's news and a surprise to me that after the first lesson your daughter was in tears. The first one went very well as far as I recall, with no feedback to the contrary provided by you. Your daughter confirmed she enjoyed it and it was high fives all round!. I therefore respectfully have to question the motive behind your feedback. After the first lesson with any new student I always say that if you don't want to continue due to the student not taking to my style of teaching, I won't be offended. You chose to continue and paid me for both lessons!
In conversation, on numerous occasions you mentioned your eldest daughter's success, in front of Olivia but for what reason? - I have no idea whatsoever. In 15 years of tutoring, I've never had a parent mention so frequently the success of an eldest child in front of their youngest. You even mentioned it in your initial enquiry! May I respectfully suggest you take a look at your parenting style, because in my humble opinion you are not doing Olivia any favours by frequently and openly comparing one child with another.
I wish Olivia all the very best. However if she was achieving "Great Results" as you claim, why does she need a tutor? I suspect her tears are more about missing her old tutor and the realisation she has a lot to live up to!
With regards to your comment "very critical of her for not understanding the terminology" All I asked of Olivia was to say "heat rises" instead of "heat goes up"! If suggesting more scientific language such as this causes such distress, then I respectfully suggest there is an underlying issue.
I have reported your feedback to First Tutors as inaccurate and very wrong.
For reference I've had multiple students of Olivia's age and students from 8 years old, with great success. I've tutored students for over three years, who have been diagnosed with dyslexia!
Please see other Feedback Comments to understand that whilst I'm not perfect - no one is - (apparently apart from your eldest) how wrong the majority of the parents of my students think you are.
Thank you
From Maureen
David has been an excellent GCSE maths tutor for my daughter. Before obtaining David's skill my daughter was failing in her maths with no confidence in the subject at all. Today I have a daughter who loves and enjoys doing maths. She is more confident to tackle new learning and doesn't get upset or loose confident when she makes mistakes and will ask for help if she doesn't understand a particular method being taught. I really like the way David has made my daughter feel relaxed when he is tutoring her and the novel way he has of giving her praise when she has completed a particular problem that she had found a bit challenging. I also like the quick feedback he gives at the end of the lesson about her progress during the lesson. This has really helped to boost her confidence as she is able to listen to how well she is and has done in that session. I would definitely recommend David.
Thank you for taking time to provide feedback. It's an absolute pleasure and I'm so pleased the lessons are making a difference.
From William
Unfortunately due to Timing flexibility we couldn't Proceed with any lessons with David. He was great to quickly get back to us, clear with his requirements.
It's a shame that after agreeing a time, I was unable to accommodate your changes. I wish you and your children all the very best for the future.

David has been my 10 year old son's math tutor for 5 months. My son had no confidence and was really struggling in his maths lessons at school. David has been excellent. He has patience and has a great way of explaining maths in order for my son to understand. My son has come on leaps and bounds. He is actually enjoying maths, is enthusiastic about the subject and is performing at a much higher standard. He would not have achieved this if it was not for David. David has a good structure of learning and I would highly recommend his services to anyone having difficulty with maths
I'm so pleased with his progress and it's been an absolute pleasure.

My 9 year old daughter currently has 3 lessons per week with David. We sought support following extended period off from school, my daughter dramatically fell behind. I am so pleased with the progress she is making, she is much more confident with not only basic maths but also maths problems which exceed her current stage. David is very engaging, I am so pleased we found him!

Quick to respond and on our first meeting was very helpful in making sure I received the correct advice and tuition for my I.T requirements.
From Sandra
We are very happy with Dave's tuition. He was a tutor for our son at GCSE level and did a great job. He was friendly and amenable which goes far with a teenager. He was obviously knowledgeable on the subject and tutored our son efficiently and at the speed required, always happy to establish where the knowledge gaps were by asking outright and questioning and observation. Dave had patience when some aspects took longer than others, an essential quality for success! Dave was always willing to help and to work around my work pattern, coming both to my house and my parents on short notice. I would thoroughly recommend.
Many thanks for the feedback and it was a pleasure to meet you and your family. I wish your son every success in the future.
From Rachael
We have been having weekly maths sessions to prepare my daughter for her upcoming GCSEs as she had lost all confidence and was struggling. Since we started the sessions in September my daughter admits that David is helping her, she no longer dreads maths lessons and she appears to be gaining much more confidence. Thanks David
Many thanks for the feedback, it's been a pleasure to help.
From Chris
Dave did a great job helping my son pass his GCSE maths as he was really struggling with this subject. The one to one tuition really helped discover his weak areas and Dave concentrated on these.
My son really clicked with Dave and I would certainly recommend him for tutoring maths and science subjects.
Many thanks for the feedback. I wish your son every success in the future.
From Michelle
David, thank you so much for the superb Maths tuition which greatly assisted our son in his SATS. Your engaging manner and patience really enabled him to build upon his understanding of the subject and clarify areas which he hadn't fully grasped. We would highly recommend you to anyone looking for some extra support in the subject.
Many thanks for your feedback - it was a pleasure to meet you and your family. Dave.

David is a very patient tutor and my son has responded to him well and is already starting to enjoy maths rather than just tolerate it!
Many thanks for your comments.

D.E. has recently been giving me a series of lessons. Not being an exam course he had to quickly understand the situation and requirements, which he helpfully and usefully did, so I have been able to make good progress to acquiring knowledge.
From Samantha
I was really pleased with Dave from initial contact through to the tuition. He has always maintained a professional although friendly approach. Kay has taken to him really well, which is more than evident in her interest in the subject and improvement in grade.
