English Lessons in Glasgow

I am registered with the GTCS in Secondary English. I completed a PGDE in secondary English teaching at Strathclyde University in 2011. I have a BA in English Literature from Carleton College in the US. In 2010 I earned an MLitt in Celtic Studies from the University of Glasgow with a specialisation in medieval Irish and Welsh literature. I am passionate about literature and English education, and I have the pedagogical background necessary to improve pupils' motivation and attainment. I am on the PVG register for children and vulnerable adults.

Tutoring Experience

I have five years' experience with supply teaching in the US, and I have worked as a tutor at university level for several years. I have completed one year of Flexible Route probationer teaching, and I am experienced with Curriculum for Excellence as it relates to English teaching from S1 through S6. I am comfortable working with pupils at Standard Grade, Intermediate 1 and 2, Higher and Advanced Higher level on close reading and all styles of writing, including discursive, persuasive, creative and critical writing. I am also comfortable working with students who are completing National 3, 4 and 5 as well as Higher and Advanced Higher qualifications. I have experience working with pupils who have additional support needs and specific learning difficulties.

Tutoring Approach

Motivation and self-confidence are crucial to success in English. As a tutor I provide pupils with individualised goals and success criteria which allows them to see exactly what they need to do differently in order to improve. Explicit learning outcomes and attainable goals help the pupil develop confidence in their abilities, leading in turn to greater levels of motivation and higher achievement.
