I am an experienced tutor of A-level and University English Language and Literature. I have a PhD in English from the University of Sheffield, a master's in English Studies from the University of Cambridge, and a first-class bachelor's degree in English Language and Literature from the University of Leeds.

I grew up in Sheffield, attending secondary school at High Storrs and later at Abbeydale Grange and King Edward VII sixth form. My diverse educational background gives me a high degree of cultural sensitivity, and a passion for helping students who have not yet found their wings in their academic pursuits.

Tutoring Experience

I have previously taught tutees in English Language and Literature at GCSE, A-Level and university level. I have two years' experience teaching undergraduate English, with a particular emphasis on skills development and widening participation work, which make me an ideal choice for students from marginalised backgrounds, and those who belong to the first generation in their family to apply for university. I also have several years experience tutoring second-language English speakers, helping improve their academic and written English, up to postgraduate level.

Tutoring Approach

It's hard to specify a single approach to teaching, as there is no one approach that meets the needs of all students. I can offer three words that sum up my teaching methods: flexible, accessible and focused. For each new tutee, I devise a learning plan that fits their unique situation, and accommodates any specific learning differences. Working with the syllabus of each pupil’s examining body, I use this learning plan to help students achieve the knowledge they need to excel in their exams. My approach also goes beyond assessment: drawing on my comprehensive knowledge of English, I help students to develop a deeper understanding of the language, honing their abilities in reading, writing, critical thinking and rhetoric, transferable skills that will aid them in their further studies and/or future career.
