Charlie

Music Tutoring in Whitchurch

I am a professional violinist, working as soloist, chamber musician, and concertmaster of the Sinfonia of London (and regular guest concertmaster elsewhere). I studied musicology for my bachelor’s, and violin performance for two master’s degrees. I have made many orchestral and several solo recordings to widespread critical acclaim, as well as live video recordings available on YouTube. I frequently perform around the UK and beyond.

Tutoring Experience

I was a teaching assistant in my second year at Yale University, and currently have two weekly violin students. I have space for up to three more weekly students.

Tutoring Approach

Teaching violin:

I identify in my students’ playing the areas it would be most beneficial to improve upon immediately, and provide appropriate studies and repertoire that will also foster holistic musical growth and enjoyment. I use this approach to build an organic system of progression for my students. I am happy to work at a range of paces suited to the individual. I expect about 2 hours of daily practice (and more as studies progress), and can help find practice strategies that suit each individual student. My belief is that joy, wellbeing, mutual respect and emotional freedom are essential to music-making, so at the core of my teaching is adaptability, helping each student develop their own relationship with music-making. Must be majority in-person.

Teaching academic music:

My strengths are in musical theory and analysis, and model composition. I also have extensive experience with studies in music history and philosophy. I am prepared (and eager) to guide students through school syllabi and university reading lists, and develop their skills in research and argumentation. I can help students deepen their understanding of music, enriching their performances and developing skills which will support them in many areas of life. In-person or online.
